Here's your thought for the day - Simplify
By Buck Anderson @ 3:03 PM :: 135 Views :: Article Rating :: Tip of the Week

Here's your thought for the day - Simplify . . .

Back when I was in college, I had a job selling stereo equipment for a local business.

The company required me to go through an intensive training program.

We learned how to make sales. How to talk to people. How to recognize and handle objections. How to know when a sale was going to happen, and when one wasn't.

One training method was called the K.I.S.S. method (Keep It Simple, Stupid).

The KISS, method of selling, warns us against selling like robots, like techies, delivering talk-a-thons about endless features and benefits that engineers might relish, but that make everyday buyers hit the snooze button.

Becoming too complicated in our selling style is an occupational hazard that afflicts the experienced pro much more than the novice.

When we’re fresh out of training, we tend to stick to the essentials that we’ve been taught, which have been pared down to basics. By being concise and to the point, we start to experience success, but then we add more and more details to our presentations because we have more stories to tell.

And what was streamlined, economical, and quite effective, becomes cumbersome, and our results begin to slip.

Although, K.I.S.S. may sound insulting, to you, it is the greatest gift you can give yourself. If it helps, use a variant such as "Keep It Short & Simple".

Recently, I had undergone major surgery and have yet to fully recover. The doctors have attributed a high stress level as a cause for my slow recovery.

My wife, Mara, was well aware of this even before I was. One day, on my desk, a 3x5 card appeared taped to a computer monitor which simply read, "A K.I.S.S. from your wife - Simplify".

That has become our business and life goal. Simplify.

Simplify the products, simplify the sales, simplify the meetings, and simplify life.

I think it is a worthwhile goal. So, be smart and give yourself a nice, big K.I.S.S.

'Til Next Time,
Buck and Mara Anderson
